A Norfolk Winter Wildlife Spectacle
Few experiences on the Norfolk coast are as magical as seeing grey seals up close. From November to January, the beaches between Winterton and Waxham become the stage for one of the UK’s greatest wildlife events: the annual seal pupping season. Just a short walk from our cottages, you can witness hundreds of seals hauled out on the sand, an unforgettable sight for all ages.
A Winter Wildlife Spectacle
The grey seal is Britain’s largest native mammal, and the Norfolk coast is home to one of the biggest colonies in England. Each winter, thousands come ashore to give birth. From the dunes at Winterton Beach and Horsey Gap, visitors can safely watch mothers tending their fluffy white pups while bulls jostle for space along the shoreline. It’s a remarkable scene. From the dune paths you’ll hear pups calling, adults bellowing, and waves breaking behind them. Many visitors say it feels like stepping into a David Attenborough documentary – only this time, you’re part of it.
When and Where to See Them
Seal pupping season usually runs from late October to early February, peaking in December and January. The beaches between Winterton-on-Sea and Horsey Gap are lined with seals during this time. The best viewing is from the dune paths above the beach. Local wardens from Friends of Horsey Seals are present throughout the season, offering guidance and helping protect the colony.
Watching Responsibly
Getting too close can disturb the seals and even cause mothers to abandon pups. To help protect them, please:
- Stay on marked dune paths and viewing areas.
- Keep dogs on a lead at all times.
- Avoid climbing down onto the beach near the seals.
- Follow advice from volunteer wardens.
By keeping your distance, you’ll enjoy better views and help safeguard this incredible spectacle.
A Perfect Winter Day Out
Seal watching makes a wonderful day out from your holiday cottage. Wrap up warm, bring a flask of tea, and enjoy a gentle stroll along the dunes before stopping to watch the seals. Afterwards, head back to the village for a cosy meal in one of the village pubs or relax by the fire in your cottage.
Where to stay?
One of the best things about staying in one of our Winterton or Somerton cottages is that the seals are practically on your doorstep. You don’t need to drive far or worry about parking – just walk from the village, follow the coastal paths, and within minutes you’ll be overlooking one of the UK’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. For families, photographers, and nature lovers alike, seal watching at Winterton and Horsey Gap is a Norfolk winter experience you’ll never forget.
