Description

Salty Dogs is ideally located in the heart of the village, providing luxury accommodation for up to four guests. With the beach only two minutes away and a shop, pub, cafés and other amenities all within walking distance, it’s the ideal choice for a stress-free, car-free holiday.

Downstairs, there's a well-equipped galley kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and Nespresso machine. Down a small step into the dining area with table and seating for four. Through to the living area where there is a comfortable three seater sofa and armchair to enjoy the wood burner and smart TV with DVD library. The spacious bathroom has a walk-in double shower, while a separate utility has a washing machine and other laundry equipment.

The traditional Norfolk Winder staircase (which some may find steep) leads up from the living area to two generous bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and another with two 3' single beds which can be linked together to form a superking double on request.

Outside, there's a private, paved courtyard style garden with large potted plants and outside seating including a dining table and chairs. There is access to the parking area via the back gate.

Salty Dogs has off-road parking for one car on the private rear driveway, with other free parking available nearby in the village. Two small or medium-sized dogs are welcome for no additional charge. Your dogs are welcome throughout the downstairs of the property and may join you on the sofas when using the throws provided.

Location

Salty Dogs is in the heart of Winterton-on-Sea, a pretty unspoilt village perched on the Norfolk Coast. It only takes 5 min to walk to long sandy beaches which are dog friendly all year round.

The local Fisherman’s Return pub (dog friendly) serves good food, and is a 2 minute walk from Salty Dogs. Also in the village within walking distance you’ll find the village shop, Poppy’s post office and tea rooms (we can recommend the breakfasts), a fish & chip shop and Seal View café at the beach.

There’s an excellent choice of walks right from the doorstep, and Winterton Dunes is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). From the end of November to the beginning of January it’s pupping season for the local grey seal colony, with literally thousands of them on Horsey beach just 10 mins drive from Winterton. It’s an amazing sight to see.

For cyclists there’s a great choice of routes and trails to enjoy. A little further afield the Norfolk Broads offers scenic boat trips or hire your own boat for the day. There’s also fishing, kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding available.

For families, the seaside town of Gt Yarmouth is only a 15 minute drive away, with a sandy beach, end of pier entertainment, Sea Life centre, amusement arcades, pleasure beach, bowling, cinemas, Venetian Waterways, crazy golf and much more. We also recommend the award winning BeWILDerwood an outdoor tree house adventure park with zip wires, jungle bridges, marsh walks and boat rides - just a 20 minute drive away near Horning. Wroxham Barns is nearby with independent shops, craft studios, a kids' farm, funfair and restaurant.

The fine city of Norwich is a 40 minute drive away, and offers shopping, museums, restaurants and a choice of theatres.

There’s a great choice of places to eat out locally including beachside cafes, local pubs and fine dining restaurants and we provide all guests with a comprehensive list in our digital welcome information.

We have stayed in Winterton many times but this was our first time at Salty Dogs and most definitely wont be our last. The location is perfect for the beach and the village provides all the essential amenities and more.As for the cottage, it was so cosy, warm and gave you a big hug. It was exceptionally well equipped and everything was top quality. It felt as if a lot of love and thought has gone into the cottage.. not just for us but for our four legged friend too. Stanley was very well accommodated and settled in very well. The most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning. The welcome gift was very much appreciated and a nice touch. We didn’t want to leave. In fact, we have walked past the cottage for a number of years and always admired it. When it came up for sale last year, we weren’t unfortunately in a position to buy it but we are delighted to have had the opportunity to stay and sample it. Suffice to say, we’ll be keeping an eye on Rightmove just in case it comes on the market again. We would have no hesitation recommending Salty Dogs.

WOW ! We have stayed in many different holiday cottages along the Norfolk. Salty Dogs at Winterton-on-sea is our favourite. Our holiday/weekend break usually goes something like this; drive down, arrive at around 4pm, unload, get settled, have a cup of tea, go find a fish-n-chip shop, watch telly, and then work out what’s missing from the holiday let -make a list and go buy said items the following day! We take as much as we with us to avoid losing precious holiday-time away. With Salty Dogs We didn’t need to buy anything, and that’s a first for us! We didn’t even need s kettle as the cottage has a ‘Quooker’ hot water system -a brew was no problem at all. Most cottages provide a welcome pack, some with more info than others. However, the Salty Dogs Beach House Folder, is not only informative, but it also makes for a very pleasant read. I personally loved the Winterton History page. We always take a holiday in February because Feb 2nd is our wedding anniversary, and this year 2026, was our 2nd wedding anniversary! While that conjures up a vision of youthful newly-weds, I feel compelled to say that I am 71, and Denise my wife is 50 something. We have been together for 24 years and are proactive in continuing to live our stress version of ‘Happily Ever After. Points to note; the downstairs shower-room/toilet, right by the front door. At first glance this might seem odd to some, and to be honest, we didn’t notice when looking online. However, it is a pleasant surprise and is more than convenient. This week we had to contend with heavy rain, but we don’t let bad weather stop us going to the beach. Having the enclosed porch to de-robe out of wet clothes and the bathroom so close, really added to our experience. Get inside, get yourself dry, and then shut out the outside world and relax. Warm and comfortable. The central heating is great, even though the cottage is quite spacious -and I might add very well laid out, there are no cold-spots. My mobility is not great these days. My wife Denise had misgivings about the staircase. However, I pointed out that it is no different from other cottages we have stayed and was and certainly do-able with the rails that are in place. There is also a vertical rail which is a stroke of genius. We really like the homely feel of Salty Dogs; much thought has gone into creating the right ‘feel’ – little touches, such as lights in the cupboards, a well equipped kitchen, good Wi-Fi, smart TV, DAB radio, as well as a cupboard draw full of board games and another full of DVD’s etc. And with really nice décor, both upstairs and down, Salty Dogs ‘does NOT look like it all came from the nearest charity shop’ There is an well planted enclosed garden with access to the designated parking space, and there is alternative parking opposite the front door, if you prefer. My wife said “…this cottage has got heart, it really does feel like a home away from home a great place to forget the world and just relax” - even Eddy our 8 yr old Shih-Tzu has sulked since we arrived home! Thanks Sarah & Paul ( Salty Dogs ) for a wonderful week, we hope to make it back again soon. Steve & Denise

Thank you for a wonderful stay at Salty Dogs! The cottage is super close to the beach, the pub and a lovely tea room, so we parked the car and didn’t drive all weekend. The absolute highlight of our visit was seeing the baby seal pups on the beach — such a special moment. We can’t wait to come back!

Salty Dogs and Winterton-on-Sea was perfect for our pre-Christmas break. We stayed as two couples and loved cosy evenings by the woodburner. The local pub is just around the corner but we chose to eat in every night. Our dogs were in heaven, with so many lovely walks right on the doorstep. A wonderful stay in Winterton.
