Property Details

Full of character, April Cottage has been lovingly restored to provide stylish and well equipped accommodation.

Downstairs, the living room has comfortable sofas, TV/DVD, woodburning stove and patio doors leading to a sunny enclosed courtyard behind the cottage. The separate dining room features an original stone floor and leads through to the well equipped kitchen with an electric oven, fridge with a small freezer compartment and a microwave. The washing machine and dryer are in the outhouse which is just outside the stable style kitchen door.

Upstairs there are two beautifully appointed bedrooms. Bedroom one has a comfortable kingsize bed, and bedroom two has a standard double bed and a shower. The upstairs bathroom features a beautiful slipper bath for relaxing in, as well as a washbasin and WC. Please note that the quirky character of the cottage means the property is unsuitable for younger children under 10 years old.

At the side of the cottage is a gravelled parking area with space for one car, and there is free off road parking available nearby in the village. The parking area leads to a pretty cobbled courtyard with a bench, table and chairs. Up to 1 large dog or 2 medium/small dogs are welcome at April Cottage at no additional charge. Guests are welcome to use the free WiFi.

April Cottage is in the heart of Winterton-on-Sea, only 5 minutes walk from long sandy beaches which are dog friendly all year round.

The local Fisherman’s Return pub (dog friendly) serves good food, and is a 2 minute walk from April Cottage. Also in the village within walking distance you’ll find the village shop, Poppy’s post office and tea rooms (we can recommend the breakfasts), a fish & chip shop and Seal View café at the beach.

There’s an excellent choice of walks right from the doorstep, and Winterton Dunes is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). From the end of November to the beginning of January it’s pupping season for the local grey seal colony at nearby Horsey beach.

  • Rachel, thank you so much for letting us stay at beautiful April Cottage. April Cottage is everything we hoped for and more. It is the perfect home from home. Everything has been thought of and all home comforts are catered for, from the bedding and towels to the wifi and the log burner. The folder in the Cottage contained lots of local information and we completed most of the walks, following the Norfolk coastal paths to see the seals and then over to Martham to see the Broads. We had fish and chips one night and they were the best we have had and the Fisherman's rest pub is 10 seconds for the door. Thank you for accepting dogs into your amazing cottage, not many places do, but this is the most perfect place to bring your pooch and our girl loved the freedom of the beach. Thank you again!

  • Myself and my partner returned to April cottage for a second time and again immediately felt at home. Such a cosy peaceful place to recharge your batteries. A home from home haven. The cottage has everything you could possibly need. The attention to detail and cleanliness is exceptional. The welcome treats an added bonus. We will certainly be visiting again soon. Thank you.

  • Our second stay at April Cottage, and it was just as wonderful. It was lovely to arrive to a snug, warm and spotlessly clean house, all dressed for Christmas with twinkly lights and a splendid welcome pack full of delicious treats. We only went out in the car once the entire week, the cottage is so centrally placed in the village and there's such a wealth of varied walks to do from the door, we didn't feel the need to go further afield. Winterton is so friendly...and dog-friendly of course too, meaning we had a warm welcome everywhere and lots of chats on our walks. Poppy's was an especial favourite for breakfast and cakes! April Cottage was the star of the week though, it's brilliantly equipped, and it was a delight to return to after a long walk and get cosy in front of the woodburner then retire to a super-comfortable bed. It's one of - if not THE - best places we've stayed in, and we're already looking at return dates for next year. Thank you for a fabulous stay!

  • Great little Cottage, plenty of room to move around in. Bed really comfy had a great break. Located in a nice spot.

    — Gary Murphy, 03 Dec 2023
  • April Cottage is a great place for dogs and their owners as it’s a short walk to Winterton beach. The cottage is cosy and very welcoming, clean and everything you could need. The log burner is a lovely addition and we used it nightly. Kitchen is very well equipped, we loved the dining room, and the cottage is well laid out. I do agree it’s not suitable for young children as the stairs are steep as one would expect in a cottage. All in all we had a great break in April Cottage and have booked again for next year! Just to add even though the beach is dog friendly all year, it is never packed and we always found plenty of room to walk without meeting too many other dogs. We would definitely recommend April Cottage to any dog parents.

  • In love with Winterton on Sea and April cottage! Cosy, comfortable with everything you could need for a break away by the sea. The highlights….most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, dog friendly, well equipped throughout, off road parking and the best bit… the beach just a 5 min walk away, my car did not move the entire holiday! Beach, dunes, coastal walks, pub, chippy, tea room, shop all within immediate vicinity. Beautiful, friendly village away from the hustle and bustle. We will be back!

    — Jo Wood, 30 Oct 2023
  • We have just returned from a week at April Cottage and everything was perfect. The cottage is beautiful with everything you could wish for and spotlessly clean, the location just a few minutes walk from the amazing beach and walks through the sand dunes was again perfect. The whole village is dog friendly with amazing cakes at Poppy's and delicious fish and chip shop. We were sad to leave after such an amazing week but will definitely be back.

  • This is our 2nd visit to the cottage. We had a wonderful week, the cottage is lovely & very clean. It is in such a good location only a 5 minute walk to the dunes/beach. Our Dexter loved his walks on the dunes & beach. We visited the Fisherman's Return on 3 occasions, the food was lovely.

  • Just returned from a fabulous break at April cottage which far exceeded our expectations, which to be honest, I never thought could ever be possible.
The Minute we walked through the gate into the pretty little court yard, I felt chilled and relaxed. The cottage is full of character and is decorated to a very high standard with warm and cozy tones and finishing touches. You will find everything you could ever think of to makes a most enjoyable stay. The beds and pillows are super comfy and we slept like babies. The bath was a very welcoming soother after a day out hiking yet hard to choose between the refreshing powerful shower. The welcome pack was also so thoughtful and the doggy treats were very much appreciated by Buzz, our dog. The village is adorable and plenty to explore with everything on the door step and not far beyond. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be back again and hope so soon. Thank you very much to the owners Rachel and Simon for sharing your beautiful cottage for others to enjoy.

  • Recently returned from our second stay at April Cottage. As the first time a very enjoyable, relaxing break. The cottage is very well presented and has everything you need to enjoy your stay. Winterton itself is a lovely quiet village, perfectly placed for us, a short walk to the beach for wonderful dog walks. We tend to eat in because of the dogs and the kitchen has all you need to prepare anything you want. All in all a very nice cottage in a very nice position. We will definitely be returning.

  • Arriving at April Cottage for a New Year break was such a delight...a beautifully-decorated, spotlessly-clean, super-comfortable place to stay, where everything had been thought of. Perfectly located for seal spotting at the beach, walks in the dunes and the friendliest of greetings everywhere we went, from the pub on NY Eve to Poppy's for breakfast and epic scones! It was such a treat to light a fire in the evenings too. Our retired guide dog had the time of her life...and was cross-eyed over the duck dog treats in the welcome pack! Thank you, Rachel, for such a wonderful stay...we will definitely return!

  • We had a wonderful stay in April Cottage just before Christmas. It was a beautiful place to stay, with everything you could possibly need. Off road Parking, cosy lounge with wood burner, comfy beds, dog friendly and a fabulous welcome pack! Superb location. Shop, pub, (the best) fish and chip shop, coffee and cake shop and vast sandy beaches, all within a couple of minutes walk of the cottage.

  • Fabulous cottage in an absolutely beautiful village, with everything you could wish for, pub, shop, cafe/post office, chip shop.....ALL dog friendly and gluten free options (even the chip shop)! 5 minute walk from a stunning beach that literally goes on for miles. Wonderful, friendly hosts. We can't wait for our next visit!

    — Jane, 01 Aug 2022
  • We arrived at April cottage Saturday 18th June for a week with our fur baby Daisy, the cottage was outstanding, exceptionally clean.
The beach was 5 minutes walk away & what a beautiful beach what made it even better was that we’re able to see seals quite close (so beautiful). We hired a boat on the broads which was amazing. Local pub & food good too. It was a “chocolate box” village! Absolutely nothing negative to say!

    — Sharon Taylor-Trench, 26 Jun 2022
  • Just returned from a week's holiday staying in April Cottage. The cottage is lovely and in a lovely location, it only took 5 minutes to walk to the beach. We had some lovely walks on the dunes with our dog Dexter & also went on one of the walks recommended in the guest book. The Fisherman's Return is a love!y pub that serves really nice food, dogs are very welcome too. We also went to Poppy's Tea Room for breakfast & their cakes they sell are delicious, not forgetting the fish & chip shop, the food is cooked fresh so you may need to wait. They're are so many places to visit, Potter Heigham, Sea Palling and Yarmouth to name a few. We had such a lovely time we have already booked to return next year.

    — Julie & Andy McMillan, 09 May 2022
  • Just returned from our 6th stay in April Cottage so that says it all! We love staying there with our dog. The cottage is very comfortable and has everything you could need. Everything is so close by that you can stay several days without even needing the car, but it is also so close to the Broads if you fancy a day on the water. Already booked again for next year.

    — Rosemary, 03 May 2022
  • You won't be disappointed!
The cottage is as charming as the pictures and its decor makes you feel welcome and relaxed - we began to unwind the moment we arrived. The location is excellent, close to the beach and a short stroll to the pub and shops. The weather, as expected in February, was grey but that didn't stop us going on a along walk on the beach towards Horsey where we were rewarded with rows of basking seals. The second day we had some sunshine and we sat in he court yard which is lovely sun trap.
Lovely cottage, lovely place, lovely hosts, will definitely visit again.

    — Lisa, Lee and Tobias, 03 Apr 2022
  • Visited for three days for a friend’s special birthday. Cottage and Winterton were both perfect. As others have said, the cottage is comfortable, stylish and cosy and brilliantly located for the beach, pub and shop. A big plus for us was to find ‘Norfolk’s Edge’, an air stream on the beach selling wonderful, restaurant quality food, including fresh seafood. It made our day returning from a beautiful walk along the dunes to see the seals - amazing! Can’t recommend highly enough.

    — Shona Browning, 22 Mar 2022
  • A beautiful, well presented and comfortable cottage. A good location in the village, within easy walking distance to the beach. Off road parking for one car is a bonus. On arrival in stormy weather, the cottage was warm and welcoming. The thoughtful arrival pack was much appreciated. Everything within the cottage was of a good standard and it was superbly maintained. I would recommend this lovely cottage and hope to visit again some time.

    — Elizabeth, 22 Feb 2022
  • What an absolute gem of a holiday cottage, the best we have stayed in yet! Lovely home from home quality furnishings, spotlessly clean and fantastic location. Short walk to the beach where we were able to see seals and pups, lovely local shop, cafe, fish and chips and pub all very close to the cottage. Highly recommended April Cottage for a stay in this area.

    — Vicky , 25 Jan 2022
  • Thanks so much for a fabulous stay. We loved the place. Please let us know if you ever decide to sell it!

    — Rachel Smith, 20 Dec 2021
  • Our family & two dogs have just returned from our first trip to Winterton & April Cottage & we had an amazing time. The cottage has beautiful decor, was comfortable & cosy & was appointed with everything we needed to make our stay extremely enjoyable. We came in November to see the seals & pups & we weren’t disappointed. Winterton has a beautiful beach just 10 minutes walk from the cottage & Horsey Gap beach is just a few miles away by car & we saw lots of seals & their pups on both beaches, but particularly at Horsey. The local pub The Fisherman’s Return is very friendly & has good food & it was lovely to return each evening to the warmth & comfort of April Cottage. The hosts were also very friendly & helpful. We would thoroughly recommend a stay there & we will definitely return again.

    — Rachael & Alan Gardiner , 18 Nov 2021
  • This was our 2nd stay at April Cottage, lovely cottage ,we have been coming to Winterton on sea for the last 12 years and wouldn't go anywhere else, we have really fallen in love with the place, its ideal for the local shop, pub, beach 5 min walk away etc . Cottage was lovely and clean felt like a home from home, would definitely stay here again.

  • Our second stay in April Cottage was every bit as good as the first, we feel so much at home & always look forward to getting back after enjoying glorious walks along the coast. Winterton is a gem as is the cottage, lucky you for finding it & thankyou for sharing it, we really want to come back but our usual dates have already been booked😔

    — Kate & Dave Turnbull, 20 Sep 2021
  • We've just come back from a week's stay in the delightful April Cottage. Such a lovely cosy home from home, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. It perfectly suits its setting in the gorgeous village of Winterton, which is as pretty as a picture! The cottage itself is well situated, near all the amenities, and only 5 minutes walk from the most stunning beach and dunes. We had a fabulous week, pooch too, and hope to return before too long.

    — Frances, 24 Aug 2021
  • We stayed at April cottage for a week with our dog recently, never been to Winterton on sea before. What a fantastic House and location. We all had such a great time we have already booked to go back! April Cottage is well equipped, dog friendly, clean and homely. The perfect place to unwind and relax.

    — michelle, 22 Jun 2021
  • Winterton is an idyllic unspoilt village, you won't need your spare change for amusement arcades but you will need it to buy plants from the locals or purchase a book for the beach from the Table Top sale on Saturdays, run by the village church! April Cottage is in the heart of the village overlooking one of the many small gardens maintained by the Village. The Pub (Fisherman's Return) is a few steps from the cottage, very friendly (especially for dogs) with good food, good choice if you are veggie too. April Cottage is very comfortable and cosy and has a lovely log fire for the chilly evenings. It has everything you will need for a great week away . The small courtyard catches the morning sunshine, great for an outdoor breakfast or for sitting out on a warm evening with a glass of something chilled. The beds are very comfortable and if you enjoy a long lazy bath then the roll top bath is amazing. We really enjoyed our time in the cottage and in Winterton. The beach is a few minutes away and offers many long walks, seal spotting, paddling or just sitting and enjoying the view. Definitely a cottage in which I would stay again. Thank you

    — Lynn , 07 Jun 2021
  • My husband, 2 dogs and I recently stayed in the idyllic cottage called April in Winterton-on-Sea. Wow, wasn’t expecting such a wonderful village and possible the best access to the beach you will find on the North coast of Norfolk!

The cottage was perfect, cosy, clean, everything you need for a perfect weekend. The decor was stunning from top to bottom. Very dog friendly with an enclosed courtyard.

We will definitely be back, when the local (I sat local, 20 feet away!) is open as it looks fabulous. The locals were so friendly, great shops minutes away and a fab fish and chips!!

We already miss the place, especially being able to sit on the beach surrounded by Seals.

What a treat! A must visit. Thank you April Cottage x

  • Lovely Cosy Stay:

This was my first time at April Cottage and Winterton on Sea but definitely won’t be the last

Arrived into a sparkling clean cottage, all made very homely and welcoming. Nice dining area (and lounge but we didn’t use it).

Courtyard may be small but it’s a perfect sun trap – even though it was cold on the days we visited, it was sheltered to be able to sit outside.. from breakfast outside in the sun wearing a t-shirt and later that afternoon with the sun on us as we had a glass of wine.

Take bath salts – lovely long bath was perfect after a windy walk out!!

To say the pub is local is an understatement – shame it wasn’t open but assume it will be soon. The local fish and chip shop was open and food yummy (phone for order ahead preferred) and a good place to meet the locals. Get back and serve on the fab plates at the cottage!

Winterton itself is a charming little village, think thatch cottages and green and best of all on the beach. Some areas of the coast can be a long walk to sea but not here. Very dog friendly as an area.

During our stay the highlight was the walk from the Winterton on Sea beach to Horsey to see the seals – so many to see! In fact it was so magical we did the walk twice. The Nelson pub in Horsey is a mile inland from the coastal path and worth the detour. No bookings required – has a large beer garden, food generous portions and tasty.

We also went to the Norfolk Broads, initially did a walk from Thurne (pub recommendation: Lion Inn who are doing some cute igloo dining outside). Then onto Wroxham to hire a boat. Boat trips will be back on late May but for now you can still hire and self-drive. Total house envy on the stretch of the broads we saw and just a beautiful place to see.

We also ventured slightly further afield to Holt (great independent shops) and an evening meal out at the Wiverton Bell – has a Michelin Bib Gourmand award and helpfully a large marquee for outdoor dining.

Overall the perfect tonic from a stressful few weeks and antidote to lockdown. All that fresh air has left me revived.

  • Lovely stay at April Cottage. Warm, comfortable and well equipped. Village very welcoming and the beach so close was a delight. Will be back in the Spring.

    — Sheila Orrell, 29 Nov 2020
  • The cottage was beautiful and clean. It was cosy and the bed was comfortable. We had a couple of meals at the pub and had fish and chips and a Vanuatu visit to the dunes cafe for their lovely scones with jam and cream. Walks with our dog over the dunes and in the sea we also saw loads of seals and the weather wasn’t bad either we would definitely stay there again .

    — Susan wilkinson, 22 Oct 2020
  • We had a truly delightful week at Winterton-on-sea and stayed in the lovely April cottage. It is beautifully presented and has everything needed for a week away from home, very clean, welcoming and very comfortable. The proximity to the beach, the local pub restaurant and a little shop meant we had everything we could ask for right on the doorstep. Thank you for letting us stay.

    — Louise Woodward, 24 Aug 2020
  • We spent the first week after lockdown at this lovely cottage and were very impressed with its super cleanliness and comfort. It was very well equipped warm and cosy. A great location for everything in the village. A very nice place to stay.

    — Anita Pashley, 13 Jul 2020
  • I have stayed in a number of cottages in Winterton and April Cottage is my new favourite. It is a really lovely and cosy cottage in a great location. It is beautifully decorated and kitted out with everything you need. WiFi, log burner and parking are also great positives.

    — Lisa, 26 Feb 2020
  • Spent 4 nights here last week. Lovely cottage, well equipped with all you need for a pleasant stay. Had a minor issue with tv reception which the owner rectified immediately, thank you. Fantastic walks with a great beach cafe doing lovely breakfasts, lunches and cakes !! Just check opening times out of season. We were blessed with the most brilliant weather which was just the topping on a great relaxing few days. Have no hesitation recommending April Cottage. Thank you.

    — David, 13 Feb 2020
  • What a fantastic cottage everything was spotless it was spacious and the perfect place to stay ..the pub was just over the road and the food was brilliant we didn’t eat anywhere else ..we will definitely recommend April Cottage.

  • Just arrived back from a weeks stay at April Cottage. I can say it was a lovely cottage, I can say it’s cosy, I can also say you will not regret booking the cottage, I didn’t last year and that’s why I booked this year. Word to the owners Ian and Shirley, love the new colour of the cottage, more classier than the lemon.

    — Chrissy Lewis, 29 Jun 2019
  • We were so pleased on arriving at April Cottage to see how beautifully it was decorated and it was immaculately clean. We were even more delighted to find some lovely welcome gifts left for us on the table. Thankyou Ian & Shirley. Being detached, it was perfect as our son has autism and has anxiety and behavioural challenges. April cottage was very enclosed and quiet, even the lovely courtyard garden was enclosed. We enjoyed the early morning walks with the dog over the dunes which are minutes away. We had lovely meals out at the Fishermans Return which is only a couple of minutes walk, also at the Hermanus resort ,The Highwayman. We spent 2 lovely days at Horsey Beach (which we drove to as it was a bit too far for us to walk to from Winterton) , swimming with the seals bobbing around near us. We spent a morning at Thrigby Hall Zoo which was brilliant both for adults and children. April Cottage was so comfortable and had everything you would need including washing machine & drier in the outhouse. Highly recommended.

  • We had a lovely stay at April cottage on 4th - 11th May 2019. The location is perfect for a nice walk around the village, you have hermanus and the local pub conveniently located. Winterton is the place we often go for the lovely long beach and dunes walks. The cottage is very well equipped and the welcome treats for your stay are very thoughtful. Many thanks, and would stay there again.

    — John & Lesley, 15 May 2019
  • What a beautiful, cosy cottage April Cottage is. Equipped with everything you could possibly need. Loved the log burner and the extremely comfy beds. Would definitely recommend this cottage wholeheartedly. Winterton on Sea is one of my favourite places and we have stayed in several of the cottages on the website all are of a very high standard. We will definitely be back. Thank you for having us.

    — Lisa & David MacCarter, 11 Mar 2019
  • We have recently stayed at the delightful April Cottage. Beautifully homely, quaint and quirky - just what was required for a restful break. Loved the log burner. Would stay there again.

  • Have just spent an amazing week at April Cottage. We have stayed in many many cottages over the last few years and when we leave we do our own personal rating out of 10. April Cottage goes far above 10 in every department, although we never met the owners Ian and Shirley we would say if we had, you have the best cottage we have ever stayed in. Thank you.

    — Chrissy Lewis, 04 Jul 2018
  • We have just returned from a 4 night break at April Cottage. This is a beautiful cottage and we felt at home from the minute we got there. Felt so lucky to be staying there. Dunes cafe is a must. Lovely food and situated by the beach. Fisherman’s Return lovely pub and food. This was our second booking with Winterton Cottages and we are looking forward to our third in August.

    — Barbara Boylan, 26 May 2018
  • First time to this part of Norfolk. What a lovely unspoilt village. Great walks with a lovely beach. People are friendly and it's very much a dog friendly place. The cottage is beautifully kept with lovely touches. The pub is worth a visit. We hired a day boat on the broads which was well worth it on a bright day. Went to Strumpshaw Fen and watched the starling murmeration which was spectacular. Great stay - thank you for your lovely cottage.

    — S Giles, 25 Nov 2017
  • You have a beautiful cottage - spotless. We had a great time, very lucky with the weather. Great location - we will come again.
