Exploring Norfolk on Two Wheels
Norfolk’s famously flat landscapes make it one of the best places in the country to explore by bike. With quiet country lanes, big skies, and plenty of dedicated cycle routes, it’s easy to set your own pace and soak up the scenery. Whether you’re looking for a gentle family ride or something more adventurous, there are countless ways to enjoy the county on two wheels. And if you don’t have your own, there are plenty of local hire options too. Just pack up a picnic, hop on your bike, and head off for your very own Famous Five-style adventure.
Coastal Cycling
The North Norfolk Coast Cycleway is a brilliant option for those staying near Winterton. Stretching all the way from King’s Lynn to Great Yarmouth, the 92-mile route follows quiet back roads and lanes, keeping you away from the busy coast road. It’s a wonderful way to see both the coastline and countryside at a slower pace. Of course, you don’t have to tackle the whole thing — there are lots of shorter loop rides around nearby villages that are perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
Into the Broads
Fancy venturing a little further? The Wherryman’s Way, Weavers’ Way, and Angles Way all weave through the magical Norfolk Broads. These trails cater to everyone from gentle riders to seasoned cyclists, with routes ranging from easy spins past windmills to longer-distance rides. For inspiration, The Broads by Bike has a wealth of suggested trails to get you started.
Thetford Forest Trails
If you prefer off-road adventure, head to Thetford Forest, the UK’s largest lowland pine forest. About an hour from most of our cottages, it’s a brilliant day out for families and thrill-seekers alike. There are mountain bike trails full of twists and dips for the adventurous, and gentle, well-surfaced paths for children learning to ride. Bikes are available to hire on-site, and there are also waymarked walking routes if not everyone in your group fancies cycling.
Scenic Spots by Bike
For a shorter but equally rewarding ride, the grounds of Blickling Hall are perfect. A gentle loop around the lake is ideal for families, and the estate itself is worth exploring too, with its gardens, history, and excellent tea room. If you’d prefer a pub lunch, the Buckinghamshire Arms at the edge of the estate is a popular choice. Closer to the coast, Bacton Woods near North Walsham offers several circular trails through peaceful woodland — a lovely place for a relaxed afternoon ride.
Pedal, Pause, and Explore
One of the joys of cycling in Norfolk is its flexibility. You can take on a long-distance route or simply pedal to a nearby beach or village pub. It’s a wonderful way to leave the car behind, enjoy the fresh air, and work up an appetite — all while discovering hidden corners of this beautiful county.
