What to Do All Year Round on the Norfolk Coast
One of the joys of a holiday on the Norfolk Coast is that it’s a wonderful destination in every season. From bracing winter walks to long summer beach days, each time of year brings its own magic. Whether you’re drawn by wildlife, village life, or simply the chance to relax in a cosy cottage, here’s what you can look forward to throughout the year.
Winter – Seals and Seaside Serenity
Winter on the Norfolk coast is truly special. At Horsey Gap, hundreds of grey seals haul themselves onto the sands to give birth to their pups between November and January. It’s one of the UK’s best wildlife spectacles and a must-see if you’re visiting at this time of year. Afterwards, return to your cottage to warm up by the log burner or enjoy a hearty meal in a local pub. The beaches are at their quietest in winter, so you’ll often find you have miles of sand almost to yourself — perfect for a bracing walk with the dog.
Spring – Birdsong and New Beginnings
As the days lengthen, the dunes and marshes come alive with wildlife. Natterjack toads begin their distinctive croaking calls in the evenings, and migratory birds return to the area. Walks through the Winterton Dunes National Nature Reserve offer the chance to spot terns, warblers, and other seasonal visitors. It’s also a lovely time to enjoy village life. Cafés and pubs begin to extend their hours, gardens bloom, and the coast feels fresh and full of promise. Many of our cottages feature sunlit conservatories or patios — the perfect place for a morning coffee surrounded by birdsong.
Summer – Sand, Sea, and Adventure
Summer is the season when Norfolk really comes into its own. Long sandy beaches are perfect for family days out, from sandcastle building to paddling in the surf. The Norfolk Broads are just a short drive away, offering opportunities for boating, canoeing, and waterside pub lunches. Local events, from village fairs to seaside festivals, bring colour and fun throughout the summer months. With dog-friendly beaches and spacious gardens at many cottages, it’s the ideal season for family gatherings and carefree outdoor living.
Autumn – Golden Days and Cosy Nights
As the crowds thin, autumn reveals a quieter charm. The dunes glow gold in the low light, making it a wonderful season for walking and cycling. It’s also prime time for foraging blackberries and enjoying hearty meals after a day outdoors. Back in the village, life takes on a slower rhythm, perfect for those who want to unwind. Many of our cottages feature wood burners or snug living spaces, making them ideal for curling up with a book after an autumn adventure.

From the excitement of seal season in winter to long summer days by the sea, Norfolk is a destination that shines in every season. And with a choice of characterful cottages — many dog-friendly and full of thoughtful touches — you’ll always find the perfect base for your Norfolk escape.
