Discover the Magic of December in Norfolk
Imagine waking up in a cosy coastal cottage, the sound of waves gently rolling in the distance and the soft glow of fairy lights twinkling around you. A Christmas stay in one of our cottages is the perfect way to create unforgettable festive memories with family and friends. Here’s how to make the most of your holiday retreat this December.
1. Choose the Right Location
Norfolk truly comes alive in winter. By December, the grey seal pupping season is well underway, with over 1,000 pups born along the beaches between Waxham and Winterton so far this year. A walk along the dunes offers the chance to see these incredible sights up close – a truly magical experience. Afterwards, warm up by the roaring fire at one of our much-loved local pubs. Enjoy a hearty meal and a festive tipple at the Horsey Nelson Head, or settle into the cosy charm of The Fisherman’s Return in Winterton – both perfect for a winter’s evening by the fire.
2. Prioritise Amenities
The little details make all the difference during the festive season. Look for cottages with those comforting touches that make Christmas special – a crackling log burner, snug sofas, and a well-equipped kitchen for preparing your festive feast. The majority of our cottages also welcome pets, so your four-legged friends don’t have to miss out on the celebrations either. Our website search includes filters so in addition to searching by dates, number of guests and dogs, you can also search for properties with woodburners or hot tubs.
3. Plan Festive Activities
There’s no shortage of festive fun across Norfolk in December. Head to The Hippodrome Christmas Spectacular in Great Yarmouth – Britain’s only surviving total circus building – for a dazzling show that’s become a much-loved local tradition. You can also visit The Christmas Experience at Wroxham Barns for a magical family day out, complete with Santa’s grotto, festive crafts, and seasonal treats. Or, for something truly enchanting, step into the twinkling wonderland of BeWILDerwood Presents Christmas: A Starry Night of Sparkly Lights & Panto Magic. Whether you prefer adventure, sparkle, or a bit of both – Norfolk is brimming with Christmas cheer.
4. Decorate Your Space
All of our cottages are beautifully decorated for Christmas, ready to welcome you with festive sparkle the moment you arrive. But if you’d like to bring along a few of your own special touches – perhaps your family stockings, a favourite ornament, or some twinkling fairy lights – you’re more than welcome to add your own bit of Christmas magic.
5. Embrace Local Cuisine
Christmas is a time to indulge, and Norfolk is full of wonderful food and drink to enjoy. We have a fantastic selection of farm shops nearby, ideal for stocking up on local produce and gifts. Visit Hirsts Farm Shop in Ormesby for festive treats and homemade delights, or head to Colman’s Farm Shop for delicious Norfolk produce and beautifully packaged gifts perfect for the Christmas table.
And if you’re heading into Norwich, treat yourself to a Christmas-themed afternoon tea at The Assembly Rooms, where seasonal flavours and elegant surroundings make for a truly special festive experience.
6. Unplug & Reconnect
The best part of Christmas is spending quality time together. Switch off from the everyday and enjoy board games, storytelling, or simply curling up by the fire with a glass of something warm. Whether you’re sharing laughter over Christmas dinner or wrapping up for a beach walk on Boxing Day, this is your chance to slow down and savour the season.
7. Capture the Moment
Don’t forget to capture the magic. Norfolk’s coastline offers spectacular sunrises over the sea and glorious sunsets across the dunes and countryside – perfect backdrops for festive photos. From the joy of opening stockings in your cosy cottage to spotting seals on the beach, these are memories you’ll treasure for years to come.
