Reviews

Have you stayed at The Cranny? If so then please leave us a review.

  • We were 4 adults and one dog and we stayed a whole week- just lovely🤩 I agree with all the earlier positive comments so won’t repeat everything! We found all folk very friendly and sooo many dogs about we fitted in perfectly. We did some glorious long walks-15km + on a few days and so loved the area- sun, sea, sand, seals, scenery, shells ,snakes (missed them luckily), salt and pepper squid, scones, shopping, saw wild deer and ate Cromer crab🦀!! Found the Natterjack toad habitat interesting too as I have been known to help toads cross the road in my area!!🐸 Altogether fabulous and we hope to return, thanks to all involved.

  • We had a lovely holiday at The Cranny. We stayed over New Year and it was still nicely decorated for the festive period. The cottage was lovely and warm despite the storms raging outside during our stay. The garden was fully enclosed and good for our dog (it looks like it would be really lovely in the summer). The beds were extremely comfortable and the cottage overall was well equipped. There is parking for two medium sized cars (we had a SUV and VW Polo easily parked). The location is very convenient for the excellent pub, fish & chip shop, general store and Post Office/Poppy's Cafe. The Winterton beach and dunes (and very good Beach cafe) are an easy short walk away.

  • When we arrived in Winterton with our 2 border collies for the week over Christmas we realised how perfect it was for us. Easy parking for the car, a safe garden for the dogs, warm and inviting cottage beautifully decorated for Christmas, and a thoughtful welcome pack. Finding that there were seal families all over the beach and some in the sand dunes just 5 mins walk away was the perfect nativity scene. There are plenty of dog friendly and seal-free beaches nearby when needed and just being able to pause for a while watching nature at its best was lovely.

The cottage was comfortable and the areas well designed. The kitchen was perfect for cooking Christmas dinner and we couldn't fault the amenities provided.

We would definitely go back to the Cranny - unfortunately it is already booked for our wedding anniversary or we could have already made the booking!

  • The Cranny is a lovely cottage, we stayed in November so couldn't take advantage of the wonderful garden but the cottage was warm and comfortable. The location is excellent, just a short walk to the amazing sand dunes and beach, both of which are perfect for dog walking. The Fisherman's Rest is just a short walk away, as is Poppy's Tea Room, both dog friendly and highly recommended. We're already planning our next visit!

    — Susan Stubbings, 09 Nov 2023
  • What a wonderful cosy cottage with everything you need and more. Beautiful garden and so close to the beach pub and fish and chip shop. Even the storm and rain didn't spoil it.

    — Russell Douglas, 06 Nov 2023
  • What a wonderful week we just had staying at The Cranny. The cottage is just lovely, the welcome pack was so thoughtful, the dogs just loved the garden as did we. Time to kickback as so peaceful, Poppy's is super as is the pub etc, Sunday lunch at Hermanus is a must. We will be back, the only thing to make it 110% would have been some comfy garden furniture or a couple of sun loungers but will just bring one with us next time. Xx

    — Lisa Brooker , 25 Jun 2023
  • The Cranny is a lovely cosy cottage, and with a very secure garden for our Cocker Spaniel, Bonnie, who, like us, enjoyed the short walk and easy access to the wonderful dunes and beach. The welcome pack on arrival was an added bonus. We will definitely be booking The Cranny again!

    — Ron Dunham, 06 Jun 2023
  • Had a fantastic few days at The Cranny. Weather was lovely, garden was a sun trap. Pub very dog friendly. Overall a great time was had and we will be back.

    — Mandy Underwood, 07 May 2023
  • Our 3rd visit to The Cranny. Such a lovely cottage, and the garden is beautiful. We'll definitely be booking again. It was such a relaxing, peaceful holiday we didn't want to leave. Just one disappointment.....Poppy's had no bread pudding!

    — Susan Woods, 01 May 2023
  • What an amazing cottage! Super clean, very comfortable and spacious too! Fabulous garden to relax in after a long walk on the beach (only 5/6 mins walk away), lovely pub serves good food and great fish and chips close by! Parked the car and never used it until we checked out! This place is perfect, thoughtfully designed …only problem was leaving there, we wanted to stay longer!

    — Debbie Fletcher, 19 Apr 2023
  • A lovely little cottage in a great location. Everything we needed was there. The beds were comfortable & kitchen well equipped. Just a 5 minute walk to the beach, & 2 minutes from the dog friendly pub.

    — Michelle Roberts , 12 Apr 2023
  • We had a lovely time at The Cranny, a well equipped and comfortable cottage, with a beautiful dog friendly garden. The walks along the dunes and beach are stunning, which were very quiet when we were there. Friendly pub and chip shop just a couple of minutes away. Thank you 😊

    — Sandie, 02 Apr 2023
  • Great weekend at the Cranny, easy walking distance to the beautiful beach, pub, chip shop and local store. Quirky, well equipped house made ideal base for visiting local sites of interest. Dog made very welcome.

    — Malcolm Robinson, 09 Mar 2023
  • Loved my recent stay at The Cranny a delightful cottage with safe garden for dogs. Lovely welcome gifts. Nothing not to like a home from home. Perfect location for days out or just visiting local beaches. Definitely recommend and will definitely be booking again. Mustn’t forget the fabulous service from the Winterton team who assisted with a booking query. Thank you

    — Denise , 10 Nov 2022
  • Stayed at The Cranny last week, it was our 2nd visit to this beautiful thatched cottage, where you feel at home straight away. Very cosy, clean and love the new patio area thats been built in the pretty garden.

    — SueWoods , 06 Oct 2022
  • This was our second and not last visit to Cranny. Very warm welcome from Tracey, cottage well cleaned, near beach and pub. Every morning nice cake and coffee at Poppy's and dunes walks. All village is very dog friendly so will be coming again. Thank you Winterton Cottages!

    — Jana Kosikova, 23 Sep 2022
  • The Cranny is a lovely little cottage ideally located for dog friendly beach walks, drinks and food without having to stomp miles but with miles of beach and coastal walks to choose from. We were particularly impressed by the straightforward and user friendly Winterton Cottages online booking, confirmation, payments and information system.
we will use "Winterton Cottages" again!

    — Alan & Milly Black, 21 Sep 2022
  • Just home from a lovely stay at the very unique Cranny. Beautiful garden with various seated areas and the friendly birds that are very tame. The Cranny has everything you could need with comfy beds and squashy pillows, slept really well. The Fisherman's Return is literally 2 minutes away but it does get busy for outside seating and by 6.30 there wasn't any available and you can't book so get there early. The poor coast line has taken a battering but still lovely to go there and watch the seals bobbing up and down. Nothing not to like at Winterton on Sea and the Cranny is certainly a perfect place to stay.

    — Michelle , 08 Jul 2022
  • We had a lovely week at the Cranny at the end of June. It was our third stay and we've booked again for next June! The Cranny is a very well maintained, beautifully clean cottage and had everything we needed for our stay - thank you!

    — Sue Ives, 05 Jul 2022
  • This is our second stay at the Cranny and it won't be the last! It's a very well equipped cottage with a great garden for our 2 dogs.
Plus it's only 5 minutes from the beach and dunes. What more could you ask for!

    — June and Wayne, 20 Jun 2022
  • Having stayed at The Cranny for four weeks this delightful cottage quickly became “home”, well equipped and super clean. The lovely garden provides a great place to relax. All things being equal we will return with no hesitation.

    — Liz Hindmarsh, 12 Jun 2022
  • What a fantastic place to stay and area to visit. The house is well equipped and everything works as it should - not often you can write that about a rental, but this one is lovely.

    — Kevin Hardy, 15 May 2022
  • Lovely stay in this quirky and deceptively spacious round house with an amazing garden. Perfectly situated in the heart of the village and only minutes to the dunes and beautiful beach. This was our seventh visit to Winterton and The Cranny is now one of our favourite properties. It had everything you need, was spotlessly clean and the generous welcome pack was an added bonus. We can’t wait to return!

    — Phil & Jo Hallows, 25 Mar 2022
  • We had a fantastic break in Winterton in this amazing little cottage. The Cranny was very clean and had everything that we could have needed. The location is great being in the middle of the village close to the pub, great walks and the brilliant beach. Is was sad to see the erosion that had occurred but it does not take away the beauty of the village and the beach. We will return again ......Thank you for a great time. Kim, Tony Charlie and Gizmo.

    — Mrs Kim Thackray, 09 Mar 2022
  • Another fabulous short break at The Cranny. Our two dogs loved playing in the garden. Pub , lovely fish and chip shop on your doorstep and not forgetting super walks and the beach. We were fortunate to see lots of seals and their pups too. Thank you

    — Ally and Karl , 26 Oct 2021
  • We felt so at home in the Cranny we've booked our next stay, next year using the cottage's WiFi. Can't wait to go back (and Poppy's Bread Pudding is calling)!

    — Raymond Woods, 13 Oct 2021
  • The Cranny is a lovely comfortable cottage. Perfect for our stay with Bonnie, our five and a half year old cocker spaniel. With glorious late summer sunshine all the local amenities were perfect. The massive dunes area located next to a clean sandy beach gave us plenty of space to wander, walk and generally have a very relaxed holiday. would definitely return next year, but the period we were seeking is sadly, but not unsurprisingly, already fully booked! To the cottage owners, thank you for sharing your lovely cottage!

    — Ron Dunham, 28 Sep 2021
  • Lovely cottage in a lovely village. Perfect for 3 of us, 2 adults and a 5 year old. Beach is brilliant, 5 minutes walk away. We spent lots of time here. The Norfolk Coast path is worth a look too, even little legs managed a good walk along the coast. Great pub in the Fishermans Return and the Fish & Chip shop too. Very well equipped cottage. A lovely stay.

    — Sarah , 27 Aug 2021
  • We absolutely loved staying at The Cranny! It's a quirky, beautifully decorated little house, perfect for 2-4 people. It comes equipped with absolutely everything you could possibly need, including dog bowls, dog towels, endless kitchen utensils if you fancy cooking... but if eating out is more your thing, the fabulous Fisherman's Return pub/restaurant is literally 1 minute away, with a gorgeous terrace and serving fantastic food. The beds were comfortable and having a TV in every room felt like a treat.

The beach is a 10 minute walk away, and with its endless sand and dunes is a perfect place for a tranquil dog walk. We found that even on the warmest day, the beach didn't feel crowded and most early evenings (our favourite time to go and let the kids and dog run around) we virtually had the beach all to ourselves. Amazing!

Winterton-on-Sea is a small village but perfect for a quiet getaway. There's a small but well stocked little shop (with fresh fruit and veg), a Post office, a Fish and chip shop (also highly recommended!) and of course the pub. All are within walking distance of the Cranny. The house itself has a beautiful garden, with birds and butterflies aplenty. Our 6 year old spent ages smelling the flowers, watching butterflies and thought it the most magical garden ever.

There's lots of places to visit too, most notably Horsey Beach with its large grey sea colony (we saw hundreds and hundreds sunbathing in the middle of August!) You can walk all the way to Horsey if you follow Winterton beach north for about 3 miles, but if that's too far, Horsey beach has its own car park which is a short 10 minute drive away.

We also recommend visiting the Boathouse restaurant on the Broads, it's a magical place with ducks and swans swimming past as you sip on your summer drink. Heavenly!

Could not recommend Norfolk, Winterton-on-Sea and The Cranny enough! Can't wait to come back!!!

    — Ana , 22 Aug 2021
  • Stunning property in such a pretty village. Absolutely blown away with the beauty of the Cranny and it's gorgeous enclosed garden. It's been refurbished to such a high standard, with absolutely everything you could need and spotlessly clean. The kitchen is more than fully equipped (even dog bowls and towels if you need them) and we were spoilt with a bottle of prosceco on arrival, milk and biscuits.

The lovely dog friendly beach is only a few minutes walk, the sea full of seals. Dunes walk to Hemsby too.

Winterton-on-Sea is a quiet, friendly village with a pub, fish & chip shop and a post office shop. Absolutely perfect for a restful week, we only wish we could have stayed longer. I can't wait to come back and stay.

I really can't speak more highly of The Cranny, it's beautiful.

Only advice for next guest would be to take a shaver point/toothbrush plug adapter if you need one.

Thank you so much for having us, we loved it.

    — Denise Johnson , 01 Aug 2021
  • We were lucky enough to pick up a cancellation slot at this beautiful cottage. It was so perfect, with stunning enclosed gardens. The house was spotless & we couldn't have wished for better. A 2 minute walk to the excellent Fisherman's Return & a 5 minute stroll to an endless sandy beach. We had never been to Winterton before & fell in love with it. We will be back & would definitely aim for The Cranny

    — Lucy Gabb, 18 Jul 2021
  • I have managed two wonderful short visits to The Cranny in between lockdowns. It is such a beautiful place to stay. My dog absolutely loves the garden and the cottage is so comfy and brilliantly equipped. There are even television in both the bedrooms as well as the lounge which was such a useful touch in these dark evenings when you aren't allowed to mix with people. Thank you Tracey, for making such a perfect place for us to stay. I shall be back.

    — Anne Smart, 16 Dec 2020
  • Just come back from a fantastic 3 night stay. The Cranny is a great sized unusual cottage with a beautiful enclosed garden which was perfect for our dog! The cottage is perfectly situated for the beach and local pub as well as local shops and fish and chips. We also enjoyed visiting Horsey to see the seals. Winterton itself is doggy central and its a joy to see all the dogs around! We can't recommend this place enough and most definitely hope to be back soon!

    — Laura Morrison, 05 Oct 2020
  • Just back from a fabulous week at The Cranny, beautiful place inside & out, delightful. It's our third time in Winterton and must admit the best accomodation by far. Our furs (2 shihtzus) settled in immediately as soon as they walked in the door. Comfy, spacious & cosy .... Perfect ...

    — Marguerite Guest, 26 Sep 2020
  • Fabulous stay. Already booked again! Very friendly village. Beach and dunes 5 minutes walk away. Nice local walks and seals a-plenty at Horsey. Chippie superb. Even had decent weather. Well recommended with a very secure garden.

    — Nick Perry, 20 Sep 2020
  • Having just returned from 'The Cranny' - Home from Home, one of a kind 'Round House' in private hands. It was great to not use the car as EVERTHING is right on the doorstep. Ideal base with a dog with the beach and sand dunes - all year round access. See you next year!! Thank you 'Winterton Cottages'

    — Andrew Bryant, 29 Oct 2019
  • This is our third holiday in this lovely area of Norfolk and The Cranny is definitely the best cottage we have stayed in! It has a lovely garden and the cottage has everything you could possibly need. The beach is so close, a great dog friendly pub just round the corner and lots of lovely dog walks!

    — Val, Richard and Tilly the Labrador., 27 Oct 2019
  • We have stayed in Winterton-on-Sea many times and the Cranny was a perfect place to stay, lovely cosy and well kept property and our dogs loved the garden...would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone

    — Sarah Hinton , 22 Oct 2019
  • Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. Winterton is the perfect beach holiday. The Cranny is the perfect cottage.

    — Paul, 02 Sep 2019
  • Just returned from a week at the Cranny which was great. It's the second time we have stayed there and would definitely recommend it. The cottage is very nicely furnished and comfortable. It's well equipped, very well located with the beach just 5 mins away, and the pub, corner shop and Poppy's tea room 2 minutes away - what's not to like!

    — Sue Ives, 07 Jul 2019
  • OMG what a fabulous place to stay, chocolate box perfect, extremely clean and modern inside. Cottage garden was a dream to sit in and enjoy the sunshine, so many beautiful flowers. Five minutes from the beach, Fish and Chip Shop fabulous, pub excellent, Poppys cafe to die for. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend. This is a 5* holiday accommodation.

    — Melanie Curbishley , 24 Jun 2019
  • Our family had a fantastic stay at the Cranny spending 2 days on a sailing boat on the Broads with Martham Boats and body boarding on your amazing beach and spotting fantastic wildlife (heron, water vole, seals, an adder, marsh harriers to name but a few). A perfect setting, garden, location and cottage itself, beautiful inside and out!

    — Gail Gilbert, 10 Jun 2019
  • My husband, myself and our Cockapoo Pipkin stayed at the Cranny for 7 nights from 26th April and loved it. It was very well equipped, very comfortable clean and tidy. We loved the house and garden and would stay there again. The village was lovely and so close to the Dunes ideal for walkers so close to the Norfolk Coastal path and for Dog walkers. We enjoyed two meals in the local pub The Fishermans return both were lovely and good quality and value for money. They were also dog friendly which was great. Thank you for the bottle of Prosecco and the pint of milk both gratefully received. I would recommend this lovely cottage.

    — Lorraine Aitken, 15 May 2019
  • Booked a 4 night break at The Cranny for Dad's 80th birthday, they had a lovely time, it was even nicer than the photos in a great location and would definitely return, thank you.

    — Sharon Housden, 08 Apr 2019
  • A wonderful property. Very clean and cosy with top notch furnishings. A nice touch having a smart tv and wi fi. Was blessed with fantastic weather from the 22nd 29th Feb. Very dog friendly village. Nice local pub (Fisherman's return) serving decent food. Would definitely recommend the Winterton Fish n Chip shop. If you want to see seals, a walk through the dunes up to Horsey,is a must. Standing on the top of the dunes overlooking the beach, depending on what time of year, you will probably see them. Would definitely stay at the Cranny again.

    — Mick, 05 Mar 2019
  • We have just spent a lovely few days in the wonderful Cranny with our dog. The cottage has everything you could need and is furnished to a high standard.. The location is superb and the online booking was easy. It was our first time staying in Winterton but we intend to return again.

    — Ian & Janet, 26 Nov 2018
  • Thank you for a wonderful stay in The Cranny. Just a gorgeous cottage. Loved the gardens - especially as we sat out in shorts in the little sun trap in late October! Perfectly placed for all amenities. We love Winterton anyway! Had a relaxing week and look forward to staying again. Bliss.

    — Helen and Antony, 29 Oct 2018
  • We came across Winterton by mistake in the hot summer, what a lovely surprise, so much that when we got home we decided that we would like to spend our 50th Wedding Anniversary there. We saw that The Cranny was available for the exact week that we required.
What a wonderful surprise when we arrived. The Cranny is in a good location, lovely place, secluded garden ideal for our Toy Poodle (Teddy) Good parking. A lot of thought has been given to all requirements in The Cranny, very beautiful cottage.
Winterton itself is a lovely and pretty place, with a lot of history to it. Some great eating places, i.e The Dunes cafe. Local fish and chips shop. The Fisherman's Return. The village store and Post office well stocked with requirements. Great walks to see the wildlife and lots of interesting places to visit.
We had a wonderful time wish we were still there. We will certainly return next year to The Cranny and would recommend it.
Thank you for a lovely stay and for the Prosecco.

    — Anna & Mike Wiseman 12th October to 19th October 2018, 23 Oct 2018
  • Had a fantastic week 14th to 21st September. Fabulous cottage, perfect. Marvellously situated, pub nearby with good food and the Highwayman at Hermanus next door served the best Sunday Lunch we have had for a long time. Had a couple of evening meals there. With shops for essentials a short walk and a host of interesting sites within a short drive it made for a great week. So good that as soon as we returned my wife said she wished to return again next year, which we will be doing.

    — Clive Buckley, 28 Sep 2018
  • Beautiful cottage set in the heart of the village close to an excellent beach and pub restaurant. Excellent garden for children and dogs. Would definitely return.

    — John Riley, 05 Sep 2018
  • Had another lovely week at the Cranny in Winterton. Can highly recommend the cottage and Winterton on Sea. Will definitely be back again.

    Carolyn and Andy Butterfield

    — Carolyn Butterfield, 20 Aug 2018
  • We stayed at The Cranny 14th-18th May. A very pretty, cosy and comfortable cottage. Well positioned to visit the local beaches plus Winterton beach five minutes walk away. The Dunes cafe makes an excellent cuppa and the pub just over the road has a good selection of generous sized meals and beer. A very enjoyable stay.

    — Jane Rawlins, 23 May 2018
  • What a smashing cottage and surrounding area! Five minutes to the beach - we loved it.

    — Mr & Mrs Bullot, 18 Feb 2018
  • I have recently stayed at The Cranny with a group of my friends and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was spotless and very clean which made our stay even better. We were able to cook in some nights as it also provides a well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed a complimentary bottle of Prosecco from the owners in the evening with an amazing entertainment system on the TV. Very short walk away from the beach and the local pub which is a stone throw away from the cranny serves lovely food. Will definitely recommend staying here if you want a get away in the UK.

    — Lavinia , 08 Jan 2018
  • We have just come back from a weekend away at the Cranny and we want to go back already! It was in a really good location, very close to the beach and a local restaurant/pub. The Cranny provides everything we needed and it was decorated really nicely and was very clean! Also, there was a smart TV which came in very handy for the evenings in. We were very impressed at the added touch of the owners leaving us a bottle of wine out! Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

    — Katie, 07 Jan 2018
  • We had a lovely time. The cottage was perfect and spotlessly clean. Our friends own a cottage in the village so we were really close which was great. Winterton is a lovely place to stay especially the walks along the beach and all those seals and seal pups.

    — K Low, 04 Jan 2018
  • Ideal base for seal watching and catching up with our family in Norfolk. Recommend Dunes Cafe for breakfast and Hermanus for carvery/veggie version Sunday lunch. Thank you!

    — T Turner, 18 Dec 2017
  • What a gem of a cottage! Tastefully furnished & decorated with everything you could need & a lovely enclosed garden in a quiet location.
A nearby pub accepts dogs & does a good range of vegetarian meals, not to mention that the staff are absolutely lovely. The beach is a 10 minute walk away. Highly recommend.

    — Sharon Fisher, 18 Oct 2017
  • I took my Mum to Norfolk to visit some old neighbours and we stayed here for the weekend. It is in a perfect location so close to the beach and the local Pub! The cottage itself is lovely with two good sized bedrooms (one ensuite) and a generous kitchen and living room with plenty of outside space. All mod cons are there yet it is full of character, we had a lovely time and didn't want to leave! Thoroughly recommended.

    — Nicola Howe, 13 Sep 2017
